Thirteen: candle

Candles are everywhere at Christmas but the most impressive display I’ve ever seen is (again) York Minster’s advent wreath.

Suspended by a couple of hundred meters of wire from the Minster’s apex, the flames burn for all four weeks of advent without fail. If you get there at the right time you can see them being hoisted up and down. Quite the event, and if you stand there for long enough you can see the entire wreath and its shadow sway to and fro.

The Minster’s ultimate advent wreath also includes the fifth central candle which is lit on either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day to signify the birth of Christ.
