Italy: Marco Mengoni

Italy

On the same night that he won Sanremo Fest, Marco Mengoni was announced as Italy’s 2013 Eurovision contestant. He’s pretty big in the Italian pop-rock world: after winning the Italian X Factor in 2009, he also won the MTV Europe award for Best European Act.

Aside from two number one albums in Italy, Dove Si Vola has been Mengoni’s biggest hit to date. He’ll be singing his winning Sanremo Fest track L’Essenziale (The Essential), but what will it take to for the Big Fifth to earn its first win since that awkward 14-year hiatus?

If your Italian isn’t quite up to scratch, the video for Marco Mengoni’s ballad might be a bit confusing. Is he drowning in love? Is he drowning in heartache because his ladyfriend has broken his cafetiere? Answers (sort of) courtesy of the EBU, below.

Hopefully the underwater string orchestra won’t be brought to life on stage at the final, but Marco’s piano-playing skills will surely get him into the top 10 – L’Essenziale has already topped the Italian iTunes chart. Problem is, he also appears to be having some sort of identity crisis. Sideburns, Elvis quiff and bar piercing all in one: it’s just too much to handle.

Contagious rating: 1/10

The Essential

Heroes say
When the game gets tough
It’s time to play
Bless them when, though
They mistake offenses for good acts
Happens to us too
To make war and then long for peace
And then in my silence
I annihilate your every single pain
And now I appreciate
What I wasn’t able to choose

As the world falls into pieces
I craft new spaces and needs
That belong to you too
You, whom I believe to be the essential

I won’t accept another
Wrong decision
Love can hide behind loving words
That I uttered before
they turned empty and vain

As the world falls into pieces
I craft new spaces and needs
That belong to you too
As the world falls into pieces
I move away from excesses
And bad habits
To go back to the origins

Going back to you
You, whom I believe to be the essential

Love won’t abide any rules
It takes your breath away
and quenches your thirst

As the world falls into pieces
I craft new spaces and needs
That belong to you too
As the world falls into pieces
I move away from excesses
And bad habits
To go back to the origins
To go back to you, whom I believe to be the essential
