Spain: Ruth Lorenzo

Spain Ruth Lorenzo

The Spanish national selection came down to a tie between Brequette and Ruth Lorenzo, who won her place to the final by the public televote with a heady ballad, Dancing In The Rain. Her selection didn’t come much of a shock, as the track had already soared to top the Spanish iTunes singles chart before the national selection. X Factor fans will remember Ruth, who struggled after finishing fifth in the 2008 competition and returned to Spain to pursue her musical career. Spain has enjoyed only marginally more success than the UK in Eurovision of late: they haven’t finished inside the top 10 since 2003. Even with Las Ketchup.

My personal Eurovision nightmares:

  1. ballads (which I reluctantly recognise as a necessary evil)
  2. whining/screaming/piercing female soloists
  3. static performers

From her national selection performance, Ruth Lorenzo is ticking all of the boxes that are sure to wake me up screaming. I’d like to say that I have fonder memories of her time in the X Factor, but this is Ruth’s ministry. For the most part Dancing In The Rain has none of the power that she can certainly deliver, meaning that unless there’s going to be some sort of pyrotechnics involved (the Big Five are often so lucky), it falls breathily flat until the last 45 seconds of vocal over-exertion. That said, this appears to be what many other voters love in Eurovision. You are all welcome to it; I won’t be listening again.

Contagious rating: 2/10

Dancing in the Rain

Light, I want to see light
Paint the break of dawn
Live, love
Feel and know that

Today, the sun may not rise
But even if it rains
You and I will dance
No one can stop us

We’re dancing in the rain
Dancing in the rain

Life, gets you every time
Open up,
You never know what you will find
You never know what waits inside

So, live
Like you’ll never stop
Take this chance
And give it everything you’ve got
Come on and let the rhythm drop

We’re dancing in the rain
Dancing in the rain

Keep on like it’s never ending
Keep on till the light of day
Keep on dancing in the rain
The rain, the rain

Let it come down
Let the rain come down
The rain, the rain, the rain

Let it come down
Let the rain come down
The rain, the rain, the rain

The rain, the rain

Dancing
Dancing
Dancing

Dancing

Let it come down
Let the rain come down

Even if it rains and we get wet
We won’t stop dancing

Keep on dancing in the rain
The rain, the rain
