San Marino: Valentina Monetta

San Marino Valentina Monetta

The San Marinese love them some Valentina! And so do I. She’s back for the third year in a row – hopefully not to make it a triple crash-and-burn before the final. She has, however, outdone herself for San Marino these past years: she gained their highest finishes with 14th in 2012 and 11th last year in the semis. Frankly, I still prefer The Social Network Song and am gunning for a return to the old days (shame she can’t re-enter with this sassy jazz version)…but this year has given us Maybe, a ballad penned by her pal from last year Mauro Balestri, and Ralph Siegel. If you can’t get enough of her 2014 attempt, here’s the Italian version too.

All Kinds of Everything: interview with @vmonetta2012

Babushki4 vs. Lordi4

WINNER: Buranovskiye Babushki

BABUSHKIiiiiiiiiiiiii great grannies! Beautiful, sweet…the monsters I don’t like.

ABBA4 vs. Celine4

WINNER: ABBA.

Long live the group of women and men, and spontaneity and fun of the 70s ;)

Do you ever find yourself singing The Social Network Song?

Of course!

Which year did you prefer competing in, 2012 or 2013?

Both, but definitely last year was a nice confirmation for me, I got so much love and support.

Who do you think will win Eurovision 2014?

Me? Hahahha :D

Would you participate in Eurovision again, if you don’t win this year?

I didn’t want it at all costs, I was asked and I accepted gladly. Whatever happens I’ll be happy because I’m doing one of the most beautiful jobs in the world and this is enough for me. Any place, in front of any audience and context I will be happy to sing.

Who is your favourite Eurovision act of all time?

But there are so many! I have to say though, that the participation of my friend Raphael Gualazzi made me happy and proud. Unusual but very good to have jazz in Eurovision.

How do you normally watch the Eurovision Song Contest?

I’ve followed it since 2008.

I remember the 2011 edition, I followed my friend Raphael Gualazzi. I was with my mother three days at the spa, and I said to her: “You know mom I’d like to be able to participate next year”, and so it was! Then I wrote Una giornata bellissima with her. Thanks mom :)

Last year I did it, I didn’t watch…or did I?!?

Valentina’s taking her floor-length dresses to the beaches (literally, in the Maybe music video) this year, and thankfully with a bit more of an up-beat smile. The third-timer can’t quite wrestle down the ABBA vibe – and she shouldn’t try – because maybe, just maybe that will be what finally gets her to the final. I hear a little I Have A Dream, One Of Us and The Winner Takes It All – do you?

Contagious rating: 6/10

Maybe

Maybe there’s a pearl in the shell
Maybe there’s a story to tell
Maybe we can not live in peace cos we’re under a spell

Maybe there’s a light from above
Maybe there’s a flight of a dove
When it’s time
To open the heart of love

Maybe we can try
Maybe you and I
Are finding pain to overcome

Maybe then one day
Every soul heals and will find a way

And maybe
We really are the dream of God
And we woke up in flesh and blood
With our emotion transformed into gold

Or maybe
In certain solid ways I feel
I know there’s nothing stronger and more real
Than falling in love

Maybe you and I
Are tear drops from the sky
That fill the sea eternally

Maybe we can try
To challenge the fear of the endless night

And maybe
We really are the dream of God
And we woke up in flesh and blood
To find our bodies transformed into gold

Or maybe
In certain solid ways I feel
I know there’s nothing stronger and more real
Than falling in love

Maybe it’s a journey in the darkest night
Maybe we can make it to the morning light
Maybe this is it this is real and I feel this is right
Finally right

And maybe
The courage that I’m finding now
Remembering and sensing how
We fell in love
