Russia: Tolmachevy Sisters

Russia Sisters

Now, here’s a couple of old hats – and they’re only 17. Twin sisters Anastasia and Maria Tolmachevy won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2006 at the age of 9 with 154 points. Then they went and released an album, created a made-for-TV film (The Phenomenal Twin Sisters), and starred in the opening act of the first 2009 Eurovision semifinal. Fast-forward to 2014 and they’ve been internally selected to represent Russia in Copenhagen with Shine, after plans for a national selection were scrapped. Glossing over a blip in the late 90s, Russia have never done badly. Will the twins be the most successful duo since t.A.T.u?

They’re preferable to the Harp Twins, which is a relief. And I truly hope that Anastasia and Maria don’t take any more leaves from the making-eyes-at-the-camera book, because there was quite enough of that in this music video already. Playing it safe with old school microphones is a wise move to avoid a catchy tune careering into gimmicky, but can we please talk about the fringes? Your hair is poker straight, ladies. There is no need to flick it out of the way every two seconds. Leave the wind-machine business to Beyoncé, Shakira, even J.Lo on her wavier days. These girls have the makings of Eurovision goddess Valentina Monetta in them (so 2012, right?), so if they don’t win, we may well see them again.

Contagious rating: 5/10

Shine

Been looking at the sky
wishing on a star
waiting for a brand new start

Living on the edge
closer to the crime
cross the line a step at a time

Now maybe there’s a place
maybe there’s a time
maybe there’s a day you’ll be mine

Now something’s got to give
make a brighter day
all we got to say

Shine into my darkness
shine into the night, my rising sun
drive away the madness
Can you be a masterpiece of love
Sending out a message out above
Telling all the world to show some love
No one’s gone bring me down, bring me down
You are my rising sun

Keep looking up ahead
riding like a wind
open up your heart, let me in

My life is on a string
when I see you smile
our love will last a thousand miles

Now maybe there’s a place
maybe there’s a time
maybe there’s a day you’ll be mine

Now something’s got to give
make a brighter day
all we got to say
