Malta: Firelight

Malta Firelight

Last night five-piece band Firelight won out over 13 other hopefuls to represent Malta at Eurovision this year. With a softer, pop-infused Mumford & Sons sound, the band are less than a year old and are among the contestants who are oh-so conveniently releasing an album this month.

In 8th place, last year’s incessant smiler Gianluca Bezzina gave Malta their best result since 2002 when the island came runner-up – but since then its been 50/50 on making it to the final at all. Do Firelight have what it takes for 2014?

If you weren’t familiar with the Appalachian mountain dulcimer before – get up to speed. Coming Home has it all: inoffensive tambourine, harmonica, bass.

Their Eurovision makeover is yet to come (my bets are that the cap will stay, the cardigan will become a sparkly jacket, and nothing will get in the way of a sneaky peek of Richard Edward Micallef’s tattoo); this band deserves some commercial success. But, despite the popularity of groups like The Lumineers and Fleet Foxes, is this Contest ready to send a country or folk song into its highest echelons? I’m rooting for Firelight and will be playing this on repeat right up until May, in any case.

Contagious rating: 10/10

Coming Home

Freedom of life, I will express my soul
Look me in the eye and electrify my bones
I ain’t gonna leave until you know my name
Stepping out of the shell, now don’t you step in my way

Roaming through fields, I’m trying to find this new land
It’s only because I’m here , I’m finding gold in my hands

I’m coming home

I’m not holding back no I ain’t wasting time
If you want me near then you must come for the ride
If your sky will fall, I’ll shelter you from the rain
There’s not a cloud in the sky that can come in the way

I’m coming home
I’m coming home

Trying to build up the words to say what you mean to me
Gonna open your eyes and let you know what I mean

Ohh aaahhh
Ohh aaahhh
Ohh aaahhh

I’m coming home
I’m coming home
I’m coming home
I’m coming home
