Italy: Emma

Italy Emma Marrone

Emma Marrone was selected internally to represent Italy at Eurovision this year with a song of her own, La Mia Città. Sanremo competitors have been selected for the last three years, and the Italian panel haven’t strayed too far for 2014: Emma won the music festival in 2012 and came runner up in 2011. She was the first of the Big Five to be announced this year, and is a pretty big a pop-rock star in Italy, having been around for a decade, with four multi-platinum albums in the last three years – and La Mia Città just so happened to feature on a re-issue of her latest album (casually the top selling album by a female artist in Italy in 2013). But all inside the rules of course, as it was released after September 1…

This song seems to have all the components of a great pop rock track, but can this blonde chick’s moody Italian star power translate internationally? She’s already been performing it at her concerts with a rock Britney meets Karren Brady vibe, although the addictive riffs have are sometimes dulled by hitting a duff note. If La Mia Città doesn’t get overproduced for the Eurovision stage, Emma’s got a good chance of getting to the top five. Let’s hope someone advises her out of the metallic playsuit and against rolling around on the floor before then, though. Yikes.

My City

I hate being in a rush,
Noises, fog,
This city’s hung time

I hate high heels
Which I absent-minded wedge
Into this city’s intrusive manholes

I hate myself at the mirror
Not for the faults
But just because it’s foolish
I love staying around
Knowing I will always be back
To this city

And please tell me if there’s a meaning to time,
To my useless wandering,
And tell me if there’s really a destination
Or if I’ll need to run to reach my happiness

And I run and run
Back and forth
I run away, I want, I take and shiver
And I hold your breath tight
And I think about myself
With no control
I push hard and I’m not scared of you
I want it all
I want you…I want you, I want you

I love downtown traffic,
I love parking inattentively
Your smile
My instability

I love being in a huff
Without even a reason
And then make up in the evening
Shut down the city

And I love myself for this
For egocentricity
Without rationality
I love fooling you around
Knowing I will always be back
To my city

And please tell me if there’s a meaning to time,
To my useless wandering,
And tell me if there’s really a destination
Or if I’ll need to run to reach my happiness

And I run and run
Back and forth
I run away, I want, I take and shiver
And I hold your breath tight
And I think about myself
With no control
I push hard and I’m not scared of you
I want it all
I want you…I want you, I want you

Please tell me if you want it
And tell me you ain’t just a confused reflection
I am looking at on the bottom of ourselves

And I run and run
Back and forth
I run away, I want, I take and shiver
and I hold your breath tight
And I think about myself
With no control
I push hard and I’m not scared of you
I want it all
I want you, I want you
I want you, I want you
