Israel: Mei Finegold

Israel Mei Finegold

Another contestant to come from a talent contest, Mei Finegold came third in Kokhav Nolad 7 and has been chosen internally to represent Israel this year – a country that hasn’t made it to the final since 2010. She can rock a ballad and an anthem, as well as a Hebrew version of Hallelujah, but will be performing the belter Same Heart, as voted by the Israeli public from a choice of three songs.

A heavy Beyoncé influence delivered with a Kelly Clarkson flourish: Mei Finegold should be fast-tracked straight to the top ten. All that’s potentially against her is a rather too busty leotard and not hitting the right strength at the start (too loud – frankly, scary and wince-worthy for viewers at home; too soft – the crescendo to the chorus will struggle uphill). The additional beat after the Hebrew verse pushes Same Heart to another level.

Will that samurai sword feature in the live shows? Hopefully Mei’s performance will focus on her intimidatingly powerful vocals instead of too many (admittedly excellent) dance snapshots. I sense she might be the lucky recipient of a few fireworks – all too well deserved.

Contagious rating: 8/10

Same Heart

You fill me up
With poisoned love
You fill my soul
With sins, but I have learnt to grow

And now, too many lies
Too many cries
They are as long as the infinity
I’m, starting to rise
Don’t need to be criticised
I’m, not an animal in captivity

I’m, skinning you out
No longer a part
We don’t beat from the same heart

And it’s time for me to clean up your mess
I will take it without any regrets
And it’s time for me to open my eyes
And to recognise
We don’t beat from the same heart

I’m, skinning you out
No longer a part
We don’t beat from the same heart

We don’t beat from the same heart

We don’t beat from the same heart
