Iceland: Pollapönk

Iceland Pollaponk

Congratulations are in order to Pollapönk, the rock band of Disney-Pixar’s dreams, who have won the Icelandic national selection with Enga fordóma (No Prejudice). The band was created by two teachers who wanted to sing sweet sweet family friendly tunes…and, apparently, take a leaf from the Teletubbie’s colour-coding book at the same time.
Eurovision is certainly a competition that appeals to all ages – but will Pollapönk’s approach be able to pluck Iceland out of an unfortunate streak of finishing outside the top ten or not qualifying at all for the past ten years (except that one time in 2009)?

All Kinds of Everything: interview with Pollapönk

Who do you think will win Eurovision 2014?

All the songs are good and have the same chance. We look at this from different perspective. We are in this to have fun and get the message through. It is not about winning or loosing.

Who is your favourite Eurovision act of all time?

Hubba Hulle. It had a feel good happy influence on us.

ABBA4 vs. Celine4

WINNER: Always ABBA for reason unknown :)

Your subject is unusual for a Eurovision song – what inspired this choice?

The song Enga fordóma (No Prejudice) is about a young person who has the habit of stuttering around others and fears to be mocked or bullied because of this. With this song it is Pollapönk’s aim to help eliminate all bullying and prejudice as everyone has the right to live in peace and harmony with the rest of the world. We think that the world needs to hear the “no prejudice” message. Especially from middle age, heterosexual, white men like us. Being middle age, heterosexual, white men makes us a majority group and we believe that we should use this opportunity to point out the injustice in this world. Of course we know that it will not instantly make the world a better place. It is our small contribution.

What will your outfits be for the live shows?

We are not decided on that yet. One thing is for sure, it will be colorful :)

How do you normally watch the Eurovision Song Contest?

We all grew up watching Eurovision. Eurovision is a family time for us. We make [a] good meal and have a party at home with our children.

From the opening lalalalala, this song puts a frown on my face that isn’t at all abated by the band’s slicked down hair and polo-neck tracksuits. There’s a section somewhere in the middle where my face briefly regains composure, but Iceland have otherwise chosen an absolute non-starter for 2014. If Pollapönk makes it to the final, earplugs on me.
Contagious rating: 1/10

Enga fordóma (No Prejudice)

Lala lalalala lala lalalala lala lalalala lala la

Life is way too short for short-sightedness
And tell me who has got the time
For narrow-mindedness
Listen to what I say
Cause every-buh buh buh buh buh buh
Body looks the same on the inside
And it puh puh puh puh puh puh puh puh
Pays:
To wear a smile

Let’s do away with prejudice
Don’t discriminate, tolerance is bliss
We got to get together on this
Cross this problem off our list
I may stutter when I speak
(but) you don’t need to call me freak
It’s not trigonometry
Inside we’re the same

HEY

Even if you’re taller
Or someone who is smaller
Or perhaps you’re thinner
Or one who loves his dinner
Listen to what I say
Cause every-buh buh buh buh buh buh
Body looks the same on the inside
And it puh puh puh puh puh puh puh puh
Pays:
To wear a smile

Let’s do away with prejudice
Don’t discriminate, tolerance is bliss
We got to get together on this
Cross this problem off our list
I may stutter when I speak
(but) you don’t need to call me freak
It’s not trigonometry
Inside we’re the same
Buh buh buh buh buh buh…

HEY

Let’s do away with prejudice
Don’t discriminate, tolerance is bliss
We got to get together on this
Cross this problem off our list
