Belarus: TEO

Belarus TEO

Last night, Teo won his place to compete in Copenhagen with the song Cheesecake. Yet another straggler from attempts of years past (Teo grasped for the 2009 Contest in a duet with Anna Blagova), try to ignore the sleezy open to the accordion and maraca-filled music video: appropriately cheesy and only borderline offensive, Teo truly enjoys singing this song – which, as Eurovision.tv reports, refers to a nickname given to him by an ex-girlfriend. Surprise surprise, “it’s not about the dessert at all”.

All Kinds of Everything: interview with @Teo_Esc

ABBA4 vs. Celine4

WINNER: ABBA

Celine Dion is still enjoying an incredibly long and successful music career, but ABBA won Eurovision 14 years before her, with their 40th anniversary being celebrated a few days ago by thousands around the world.  They win this match: singer songwriters with melodies that are ageless.

Babushki4 vs. Lordi4

WINNER: the beautiful Babushki grandmothers, definitely.

They had humour, bravery and a willingness to celebrate their culture and join in the party.  Plus, my musical background shares a love of traditional music.  I co-host a TV show called Наперад у мiнулае (Forward to the Past) on the Belarus 1 channel.  We find singers of the traditional and ancient songs, usually the village grandmothers and grandfathers from small villages and select one of their songs.  I am then given the challenge of rearranging this song before it is recorded and sung with a much more modern sound by a well-known artist. You can see the episodes of the program here.  It’s a real privilege to be part of this project.

Who would win in a dance-off between you and Robin Thicke?

Hopefully me, as I’ve been practising, and now that Tine Matelussy [a well known choreographer from Sweden] arrived in Belarus [on April 7], my moves should be even better by the time of the second semi-final in Copenhagen.

However, I’d like to point out that I’m a bit puzzled by the comparisons with Robin Thicke as he wasn’t the first guy to wear a black suit with a white shirt.  Plus, there are no ‘blurred lines’ in my song or its meaning. I’m the one being objectified in the song and video for Cheesecake, and the lyrics make clear that I don’t like it.  The simple message is that we all want to be treated with respect.

Which of this year’s acts would you most like to work with?

Everyone I met in Amsterdam for the ‘Eurovision in Concert’ I would gladly work with now and in the future.  The songs and styles this year are very different.  To name a few: Conchita’s James Bond-style ballad, Risky Kidd’s dance song with rap, Aarzemnieki’s fun Cake To Bake, Sebalter’s use of traditional instruments and whistling; Ruth Lorenzo’s power ballad, the adorable Maria Yaremchuk, Molly from the UK. On 20th April I’ll be singing with the winning Junior Eurovision ‘graduates’ the Tolmachevy Sisters, Sanna Neilsen, Paula & Ovi and Dilara Kazimova.  I’m open to any type of performance that they’d like me to be involved in.

Who do you think will win Eurovision 2014?

I think the previous question shows that this is an impossible one to predict.  The songs cover so many genres and moods and issues and styles. Each one has that undefinable ‘something’ and who knows what will capture the judges, voters and audience on the night?

Who is your favourite Eurovision act of all time?

I’m always going to have a soft spot for all of the Belarusian singers of course, and the winners.  Each one has been performed to an incredibly high standard, showing professionalism, passion and fan.

How do you normally watch the Eurovision Song Contest?

Belarus has been participating in Eurovision for 10 years now, so for me it was always at home, watching the semi finals and the final live on television with friends. Good company and good things to eat are my traditions!

But I’m not Patrick Swayze

Well, no, but Teo’s got some moves prepared for a dance-off with Robin Thicke, judging by the dancing at the national selection (note the collar pop just before the little acoustic section). All that can hoped for is that he makes the final, so the world is exposed to Cheesecake as many times as possible.

Contagious rating: 6/10

Cheesecake

Yeah, baby…

Once I gave you one more chance
You showed me dance
But I’m not Patrick Swayzee
You’re not Jennifer Gray

I told this story
But I’m so sorry
I lost my train of thought
When you called me, “My sweet Cheesecake”

I don’t wanna be your toy perhaps today
I’m not gonna be your boyfriend
It’s too late
I look over all the maps trying to escape
’cause I’m tired of your sweet cheesecake

I don’t wanna be your toy perhaps today
I’m not gonna be your boyfriend
It’s too late
I look over all the maps trying to escape
’cause I’m tired of your sweet cheesecake

Ohh…yeah…do-do-do-do

Hey(hey) I will fy far away (aay)
By any plane just not to meet you
On my way, don’t stay, (hay )

You dial my number
Your dreams start crumbling
You want me to be the man I’ll never ever be

I don’t wanna be your toy boy today
I’m not gonna be your boyfriend
It’s too late
I look over all the maps trying to escape
’cause I’m tired of your sweet cheesecake

I don’t wanna be your toy boy today
I’m not gonna be your boyfriend
It’s too late
I look over all the maps trying to escape
’cause I’m tired of your sweet cheesecake

Ohh….yeah…do-do-do-do

I don’t want to be your toy
I don’t want to be your boy
Oh, oh

I don’t wanna
I don’t wanna be your toy
I don’t wanna
I don’t wanna be your boy, baby. Oo-oo-o

Yeah

I don’t wanna
I’m not gonna be your boyfriend
It’s too late
I look over all the maps trying to escape
’cause I’m tired of your sweet cheesecake

I don’t wanna be your toy perhaps today
I’m not gonna be your boyfriend
It’s too late
I look over all the maps trying to escape
’cause I’m tired of your sweet cheesecake

(cheesecake)
I don’t wanna ( heeey)
I’m not gonna be your boy (heeey)

I look over all the maps trying to escape
’cause I’m tired of your sweet cheesecake
Oo-ooo-oo, Ee-ee-ee
I don’t wanna ( heeey)
I’m not gonna be your boy ( heeey)

I look over all the maps trying to escape
’cause I’m tired of your sweet cheesecake
