Austria: Conchita Wurst

Eurovision Song Contest 2014

Austria desperately needs to avoid the Eurovision disasterzone, after failing to make it to the final once again last year. Will Conchita Wurst be able to take them there? In the past ten years Conchita has segued from Austrian talent show to boyband, and this isn’t a maiden attempt at Eurovision, either: Conchita came in a very close second at the Austrian national selection for the 2012 Contest, losing out by just 2% of the votes.

On the inspiration for Rise Like A Phoenix

I would have to ask the writers for their inspiration, but my personal story with this song is power! The power to go on, even if the bad times have been the worst you witnessed.

How much is your song about struggling with sexuality?

I think for me more than maybe for others. And that’s the great thing about this song. Everyone can relate to this situation.

Who is your favourite Eurovision act of all time?

It would be Celine Dion, cause she is my hero ever since. Her voice was perfect from her very start, that’s unbelievable.

What will your outfit for the live shows be?

Oh that’s a secret, but I know exactly what it looks like cause I designed it myself.

Which of this year’s acts would you most like to work with?

I would love to work with Ruth, she is stunning. Also Molly would be a great duet partner.

How do you normally watch the Eurovision Song Contest?

I would watch it with my friends, as always in the last years. We always have a big big party, way longer then the Contest lasts :D

There has been a mixed reaction to Conchita – how has this affected you? What will your next step be in working against discrimination?

Well if it’s just about Conchy and me…I can take that because I don’t really care. If people hurt human rights with her statements in general I turn into a lioness. We are in the 21st century and still keep occupied with race, sexual orientations and beliefs. How sad is that? Cause it’s not about that, it’s not about where you are from or who you love! It’s about the person. There is more than black and white-thinking. [sic]

I don’t really work in steps, I just try to spread my beliefs and maybe change some minds.

In so many ways, Rise Like A Phoenix is the best song Conchita could have penned or picked. A meaningful ballad that verges on the right side of showtune, Conchita might not have the most vocally perfect delivery, but this song is powerful, authoritative and addictive nonetheless. A duet with Shirley Bassey would come none too soon, and I hope Conchita makes it to the final.

Now, can we talk about the video? The bathtub! The chaise! The billowing curtains! Which of these props will be resurrected at the live shows? I personally hope all of them, with a whole field of rose petals for good measure.

Contagious rating: 10/10

Rise Like A Phoenix

Out of the ashes
Seeking rather than vengeance
Retribution
You were warned
Once I’m transformed
Once I’m reborn
You know I will rise like a phoenix
But you’re my flame

Go about your business
Act as if you’re free
Noone could have witnessed
What you did to me

Cause you wouldn’t know me today
And you have got to see
To believe
From the fading light I fly

Rise like a phoenix
Out of the ashes
Seeking rather than vengeance
Retribution
You were warned
Once I’m transformed
Once I’m reborn

I rise up to the sky
You threw me down but
I’m gonna fly

And rise like a phoenix
Out of the ashes
Seeking rather than vengeance
Retribution
You were warned
Once I’m transformed
Once I’m reborn
You know I will rise like a phoenix
But you’re my flame
