Hungary: András Kállay-Saunders

Hungary Kallay-Saunders

Another national final down, another act announced: András Kállay-Saunders will be representing Hungary this year with Running, a song about child abuse based on the life of one of his friends. Hungary have had a tough, sporadic time competing in the Contest. Will 2014 see any improvement?

Kállay-Saunders grew up in the US but while on a trip to Hungary he applied for talent competition Megasztár – he finished fourth and decided the landlocked country was for him, and has lived there since. He’s no Eurovision virgin either, having put in a bid to represent Hungary last year with My Baby, which shot to number one on the Hungarian iTunes charts.

While the subject matter is important – even if not traditional Eurovision fare – there’s something else jarring about Running. Between the whispy teen playing the teddy-topped piano and the background dance beat, András’ delivery is distracted by the fact that he is performing on stage with strobe lights and an all-too-real man in a mask. Making it to the final? Dubious.

Contagious rating: 3/10

Running

Silent cry, every night
This pain will never even lie
Daddy’s home, so she tries to hide
She calls her mum, but never a reply
She cries, cries, cries
She’s all alone

Daddy why, why, why, leave me alone
She calls for help,
She calls for help, but no one seems to care,
She calls for help, but no one seems to care.

She keeps on running, running, running from this crazy life
She keeps on running, running, running, never sees the light
I can see the angels standing by your side
It’ll be alright

He’s back again, just one more time
Just wants to see her mother smile
She can’t forget her only child
Mama, let the devil in the house
She cries, cries, cries
She’s all alone

Daddy why, why, why, leave me alone
She calls for help,
She calls for help, but no one seems to care,
She calls for help, but no one seems to care.

She keeps on running, running, running from this crazy life
She keeps on running, running, running, never sees the light
I can see the angels standing by your side
It’ll be alright
She keeps on running, running, running from this crazy life
She keeps on running, running, running, never sees the light
