Albania: Hersi Matmuja

Herciana Matmuja has beaten 15 other contestants at the Albania national selection with the song Zemërimi i një nate (One Night’s Anger) – a bizarre rock orchestra not-quite-ballad wailing contest. The serial music festival competitor and classical singer has already gone through a heavy edit, but can she avoid being the fifth Albanian act that has failed to qualify for the final in 10 years?

What’s that, Shakira? You’ve lost 13 years, changed your hairstyle and entered Eurovision? It’s pretty clear where Hersi’s musical influences come from, but her passions for horse riding, standing in shallow water and collapsing on sandy plains are little less obvious. The morph into disturbed Kelly Clarkson could translate very, very badly on stage – and speaking of live performances, mine ears, mine ears! The translation of One Night’s Anger revealed less furious things than Hersi’s national selection rendition seemed to bemoan, and Ms. Matmuja has a powerful voice hidden under that curtain hairstyle – I just feel sorry for the orchestra having to sit through it so many times in live rehearsals, only to be chopped out in favour of electric guitar in the music video. With any luck this will be a static affair that makes sense of the not-so-subtle segue from sweet beginnings (by far my favourite section) to guitar-heavy interlude and rock finale. She’ll probably arrive looking even more like Kanye West has had words with her about ‘style’; at least there’s a little something for everybody.

Contagious rating: 7/10

One Night’s Anger

Say no, let go, keep your breath, as the anger flows
I Know, you know, words can hurt, you’ll regret them though
So say say say say you’ll be there when the words are done
Don’t give in your pride,
Keep calm and think twice

Chorus: Free your mind from the doubts that are tickling
Free your heart, and let the peace enlighten your feelings
Sun will rise, and the light will be clearing
The tides of the night
keep calm and think twice

Say no, let go, night will fade and the day will glow
I know, you know, that the morning is brighter so
Please say say say say you’ll be there when the words are done
Don’t give in your pride
Let go and don’t cry

Chorus: Free your mind from the doubts that are tickling
Free your heart, and let the peace enlighten your feelings
Sun will rise, and the light will be clearing
The tides of the night
Keep calm and think twice

Chorus: Wait a tick tiny tick, you’ll regret it (just wanna say it right)
Wait a tick tiny tick; you’ll forget it (I want to let it out)
Anything isn’t it you want to get it,
Maybe tomorrow, will be late to get by
