Blandings – BBC One

Six episodes were just about enough for Blandings, as well as for Empress, the sow who starred in the series and sadly died just before the broadcast of the final episode. An overdose of slapstick detracted from the remnants of P.G. Wodehouse’s canon, although a few “top banana” gems remained.

With an all-star BBC cast – Jennifer Saunders playing it relatively prim and proper, Mark Williams wielding a silver tray as Beach and Timothy Spall whispering sweet nothings to Empress before stacking it in a mud puddle – at 6pm on BBC One, the series is ideal for encouraging twelve-year-olds into Wodehouse’s world of literature, where charm rests unadultered.
